Terraces, Walls and Hardscaping in East Amwell Township, NJ

East Amwell runs from open farmland up onto the Sourland Mountain, where boulders and shallow rock are part of every dig. We build terraces, walls and patios that work with that ground.

East Amwell Township covers the southeastern corner of Hunterdon County. The northern part is open farmland and small villages such as Ringoes, while the south rises onto the Sourland Mountain, a long wooded ridge. Homes include old farmhouses, mid-century houses along country roads and newer homes on large wooded lots. Many sit on hills, and nearly all of them use wells and septic systems.

The Sourland ground is what sets East Amwell apart. The ridge is hard diabase rock under a thin layer of stony soil, and boulders turn up in almost every excavation.

Building terraces on rocky slopes

On a slope, the best way to gain usable space is often a terrace: a retaining wall that holds a level patio, lawn or parking pad. The raised stamped concrete terrace at the top of this page shows the idea, with steps built into the wall. In East Amwell we often find ledge a short way down, so we size each footing to the conditions we actually hit rather than to a drawing alone.

Drainage on shallow soil

Thin soil over rock means water has nowhere to soak in. It runs across the surface and pools wherever it can. Every patio, walkway and wall we build here gets a free-draining base, a clear outlet and a plan for where runoff goes. Ignoring this is why so many patios on the mountain heave and tilt after a few winters.

Farm properties and outbuildings

On the farmland side of the township, the work shifts toward old stone foundations, barn walls and new concrete pads for garages and sheds. We repoint and rebuild fieldstone, pour footings below frost, and handle new foundations for additions that join an older house.

Patios and fire pits

Large wooded lots are well suited to a full hardscape plan: a patio near the house, a path into the woods and a stone fire pit. Boulders from the dig often become seating or edging.

FAQ

East Amwell, NJ FAQs

Can’t find your answer? Call us at (973) 874-8169.

Why is digging so hard on the Sourland side of East Amwell?

The mountain is made of hard diabase rock, and the soil on top is thin and full of boulders. Footings and wall bases often run into rock quickly. We plan for that at the estimate and use the rock as a solid base where it makes sense.

Our yard stays wet even though it is on a hill. Why?

Sourland soils drain poorly because rock sits so close to the surface, so water perches on top of it. We build patios and walls with extra drainage stone and outlets, and often add a swale above the work to carry water around it.

Can you use the boulders from our yard in a wall?

Often yes. Large stones dug out during excavation can become a boulder wall, steps or edging. It keeps material on site and fits the wooded setting.
