High Bridge is a borough on the South Branch of the Raritan River in northern Hunterdon County, named for a tall railroad bridge across the river valley. The town grew around an ironworks, and the homes built for that era still line its streets: modest frame houses, many with stone or block foundations, set on small lots up and down steep hillsides. Newer homes sit higher up on the edges of town.

Very few High Bridge lots are flat. Front yards are held up by walls, driveways climb, and backyards drop toward the river or ravines.

Retaining walls that carry real loads

Old dry stone and mortared walls are part of the town’s character, but many are past their working life. When a wall holds up a driveway, a parking pad or a neighbor’s yard, it needs to be built for that load. We design and build segmental block and reinforced retaining walls with compacted base, drainage stone, outlets and geogrid where needed. For lower garden walls, natural stone fits the older streets.

Steps on steep streets

Getting from the sidewalk up to a High Bridge front door can mean a dozen steps or more. We rebuild steps and landings on solid footings, set railings into the masonry and finish with brick, stone veneer or bluestone. For walls and steps that need to work together, we design them as one structure.

Older foundations

Foundations on hillside houses face constant pressure from uphill soil and water. Block walls crack in stair-step patterns, and stone walls lose mortar. We repair cracks, rebuild bowed sections, and handle foundation repair such as new footings and underpinning where settlement has occurred.

Our checklist for a sloped High Bridge lot

  • Load. Is the wall holding soil, a driveway or a structure?
  • Water. Where does runoff from the hill above go?
  • Access. Steep, narrow streets can limit equipment size.
  • Neighbors. Shared walls and property lines need to be clear before work starts.

FAQ

High Bridge, NJ FAQs

Can’t find your answer? Call us at (973) 874-8169.

Our High Bridge driveway is held up by an old block wall that is cracking. Is that urgent?

A wall that supports a driveway carries car loads as well as soil, so cracks and lean deserve a prompt look. We assess whether it can be repaired or needs rebuilding, and whether the replacement needs an engineered design.

Can you match the stone on our older house?

We try to. We look at the color, size and shape of the existing stone and source the closest match, often blending a few types so new work reads like the old.

Who issues permits for walls and steps in High Bridge?

The borough building department. High Bridge is its own municipality, separate from Clinton Township and Lebanon Township around it, and we confirm what your project needs before we start.
