Delaware Township is a rural Hunterdon township that stretches from the farm fields around Sergeantsville down to the Delaware River. The township is known for preserved farmland, small historic villages and Green Sergeant’s Covered Bridge, the last historic covered bridge in New Jersey. Homes range from stone and frame farmhouses well over a century old to newer houses set back on large wooded or open lots.
Stone is everywhere in this landscape: field walls along roads, bank barns, stone foundations and chimneys. Most of our work here either repairs that old stone or adds new stone that looks like it has been there just as long.
Field walls and front yard walls

Old walls along roads and driveways shift as frost heaves the ground and roots work between the stones. We rebuild failing sections, set new caps and extend walls with matching stone. For entries and drives, a mortared stone masonry wall with stone curbing gives a clean edge that still reads as country.
Farmhouse foundations and chimneys
Fieldstone foundations under township farmhouses were laid with lime mortar that slowly washes out. Damp cellars, loose stones and bowed sections follow. We repoint, reset and rebuild sections as needed, and use historic restoration methods that respect the original wall. The same thinking applies to big stone chimneys, where the top few feet usually take the most weather.
Patios that suit an old house
A bluestone patio set in a simple pattern, with a stone step down to the lawn, fits a farmhouse better than a busy paver design. We build on a deep gravel base to handle the clay and shale soils, and keep patios clear of septic fields and well lines. An outdoor stone fireplace or fire pit can extend the season on cool evenings.
Worth knowing before a rural project
- Long gravel lanes may need smaller deliveries
- Preserved farmland can carry its own limits on what is built
- Matching stone takes time to source, so plan ahead
- Spring is busy, so a winter estimate helps with scheduling
