Kingwood Township is a large, quiet municipality in western Hunterdon County, running from the uplands around Baptistown to the bluffs above the Delaware River. It is mostly farms, fields and woodlots, with homes set far apart on big parcels. Houses include old farmhouses, converted barns and newer custom homes on several acres, nearly all on private wells and septic.

What Kingwood homeowners have that most of our customers do not is space. And space changes how we design outdoor projects.

Designing a patio for a big lot

On a small suburban lot, a patio fills the yard. On a Kingwood property, it has to hold its own in a wide landscape. We often design larger paver patios broken into areas: dining near the kitchen door, a lounge space further out, and a fire pit at the edge of the lawn. A strong border or soldier course frames the space so it does not look lost.

Fire pits and outdoor fireplaces

Long rural evenings make a fire feature one of the most popular additions here. A stone fire pit or outdoor fireplace gives the patio a focal point and blocks the wind on cool nights. We keep fire features a safe distance from trees, the house and any outbuildings.

Walkways across the property

Paths matter on a big lot. A walkway from the driveway to the house, out to the garden or across to a barn keeps mud out of the house. Pavers, bluestone and gravel with stepping stones each have a place, depending on how much traffic the path gets.

Ground conditions

Kingwood sits on the shale and clay soils common in western Hunterdon. They hold water and heave in winter. We build every patio and walkway on a deep, well compacted gravel base and pitch it so water runs off toward open lawn, not toward the house or the septic field.

On a Kingwood site visit we look at

  • Sun, shade and prevailing wind
  • Where vehicles and deliveries can reach
  • Well and septic locations
  • Matching stone to an older farmhouse or barn

FAQ

Kingwood, NJ FAQs

Can’t find your answer? Call us at (973) 874-8169.

How big should a patio be on a large Kingwood property?

Big enough for how you will use it, not just for the size of the lot. We lay out the furniture, grill and fire pit with you on site, then size the patio around that. A large lot does not need a giant slab of pavers to feel generous.

Will a patio on open ground get too much sun and wind?

It can. We often place patios on the east side of the house for afternoon shade, or near trees and hedgerows that break the wind. A stone seating wall also helps.

Can you work around our well and septic?

Yes. We locate both before design and keep the patio, walls and heavy equipment away from the tank, field and well line.
