Boonton Township is the rural neighbor of the Town of Boonton, and the two are separate municipalities with separate building departments. If you live in the compact downtown area, see our Town of Boonton page instead.
The township is mostly wooded hills, with homes set well back from winding roads on lots measured in acres rather than feet. Houses range from mid-century ranches to large newer colonials and contemporaries. The land is part of the Highlands, so shallow ledge, loose boulders and steep grades are the normal starting point for any outdoor project.
Building around rock and slope
Digging here rarely goes as planned on paper. A patio footprint can hit ledge a foot down, while the next corner is soft fill. We probe and walk the site during the estimate and lay out the work to use the grade rather than fight it. Terraced retaining walls are often the key, turning one steep bank into two or three level spaces linked by steps.
Long driveways and runoff
Long, sloped driveways are typical, and they carry a lot of water in a heavy storm. Most of the damage we see starts with runoff traveling down the drive and undercutting the edges. We rebuild concrete and asphalt driveways on a thicker stone base, crown or pitch the surface, and add drains or stone swales where the water collects. Natural stone curbing along the edge can keep plows and tires off the lawn.
Stone that fits a wooded setting

Owners on these lots usually want hardscape that looks at home among the trees. Natural stone walls, bluestone walks and a stone fire pit or outdoor fireplace suit the setting better than bright concrete. Our stone masonry work includes wall faces, veneer on foundations and stone entry steps.
What to plan for
- Rock removal. Ledge can add time to excavation. We point out likely problem spots at the estimate.
- Septic and wells. Many rural lots have both, and we keep the work clear of them.
- Steep slopes and streams. Environmental rules can apply near water or on steep ground, so check early.
- Tree protection. We route walls and walks around major roots where we can.
Boonton Township borders Kinnelon and Montville, and we cover the rest of Morris County too. Ready to tame a slope? Book a free estimate for your Boonton Township home and we will walk the property with you.
