Rockaway Township is one of the larger municipalities in Morris County by land area, and much of it is forest, ridgeline and water in the New Jersey Highlands. It wraps around the much smaller Rockaway Borough, which has its own government and building department. Homes in the township range from older lake cottages and year round homes in private lake communities, to mid century raised ranches and split levels, to large newer colonials in subdivisions on the hillsides. The common thread is terrain: steep grades, thin soil over rock, and plenty of runoff.
Turning a hillside into a yard
Few township properties come with a flat backyard. A level lawn, a play area or a patio usually depends on a retaining wall. We build segmental block and natural stone walls on compacted gravel with clean drainage stone behind them, and we split tall grades into terraces. If a wall needs an engineered design, we tell you during the estimate.
Layered outdoor spaces

Raised ranches and split levels often have a deck or upper door on one side and a walkout on the other. Our hardscaping plans connect those levels with stone steps, a terrace for dining and a lower patio near the walkout. Pools on sloped lots need a solid, well drained deck, and we build those in pavers or stamped concrete along with new coping.
Driveways that climb
Long, steep driveways are a fact of life in the township. They need a deep base, a surface that gives traction, and a plan for water so it does not wash out the edges or flow into the garage. We replace drives in asphalt, concrete or pavers and add channel drains or curbing where runoff concentrates.
Front steps on raised homes
Raised ranches put the front door well above grade, and the steps take the brunt of the weather. We rebuild them in concrete, brick or stone veneer on frost depth footings, with a landing and railings sized for the climb.
