Washington Township in Morris County is a large, rural municipality in the southwest corner of the county, bordering Hunterdon and Warren counties. It includes Long Valley, with its small historic center in the valley of the South Branch of the Raritan River, and Schooley’s Mountain on the ridge above. Much of the township is still farmland, horse properties and wooded hills. Homes range from old farmhouses and stone barns to mid century houses and newer colonials on large lots, many with wells, septic systems and long driveways.
Stone that fits the countryside
Field walls, stone foundations and stone barns are part of the township’s look. New work here often uses natural stone so it fits in. Our stone masonry and brickwork includes front yard walls, stone curbing along a driveway, veneer on foundations, and rebuilding old walls that have tumbled. We match stone size and color as closely as possible.
Outdoor living on open land

With long views and large lots, many homeowners want an outdoor space that faces the land. A patio with an outdoor fireplace or fire pit, low seating walls and a walkway out to the lawn or garden is a common plan. On the hillier Schooley’s Mountain lots, a retaining wall may be needed to create the level area first.
Long driveways and farm lanes
Driveways in the township can be very long, with slopes, culverts and sections that wash out every spring. We rebuild them in asphalt or concrete with a base suited to the soil, add paver or stone aprons near the house, and plan drainage where water crosses the drive.
Planning on rural property
- Wells and septic. Keep heavy equipment and new hardscape away from both.
- Farmland and open space. Some parcels may have preservation restrictions, so check your deed and the township.
- Streams and the river. Lots near the South Branch or its tributaries may face buffer or flood zone rules.
- Access. Long distances from the road mean planning delivery routes ahead.
