Mendham Borough is the compact village at the heart of the Mendhams, surrounded on all sides by Mendham Township. Its center has some of the oldest houses in this part of Morris County: clapboard colonials, Victorian era homes and farmhouses set close to the road, many with original stone foundations and fieldstone walls along the front. Away from the center, the borough shifts to mid century and newer homes on wooded, rolling lots. The ground climbs and dips throughout, and stone turns up in nearly every excavation.
Respecting the village look
On an older Mendham house, the front entry sets the tone. Brick or stone steps, a bluestone landing and a simple walkway to the street usually suit these homes better than anything flashy. Our historic masonry restoration work focuses on keeping what is original where it can be saved, and rebuilding with matching materials where it cannot. That might mean resetting a heaved bluestone walk, repairing a fieldstone foundation, or rebuilding a stoop with soft mortar that will not damage older brick.
Brick and mortar that has seen a lot of winters

Mortar joints on chimneys, foundations and steps wear out long before the brick does. Once joints open up, water gets in, freezes and pushes units apart. Tuckpointing removes the failed mortar and replaces it with a mix suited to the age of the masonry. On newer homes in the borough, we rebuild cracked concrete steps and add stone veneer or bluestone treads so they look at home on the street.
Walls and walkways on rolling lots
Low stone walls are part of the Mendham landscape. Many were dry laid generations ago and have slumped or lost stones to frost and roots. We can reset them, rebuild sections with mortar, or add a new wall that holds a planting bed or levels a sloped front yard.
A few things to plan for
- Historic district review. Visible exterior changes in parts of the borough may need approval first.
- Mature trees. Large roots often run under old walks. We lay out new work to protect the trees you want to keep.
- Stone underfoot. Buried rock can change how deep we dig and how a wall is set.
Nearby and next steps
The borough’s building department is separate from the township’s, so the exact address matters. If you live outside the village, see our Mendham Township page, or browse other towns in Morris County. To talk through steps, a wall or a walkway, request a free estimate and we will come out to look at the property.
