Mendham Township is one of the most rural corners of central Morris County. Homes sit on large parcels, often several acres, with long private drives, paddocks, stone walls along old field lines and plenty of mature woods. The township surrounds Mendham Borough and includes the Brookside area. Houses range from historic farmhouses to large custom homes built in the last few decades. Most rely on wells and septic systems, and the ground is hilly with rock never far below the topsoil.

Outdoor rooms at estate scale

With this much land, the challenge is usually connecting spaces rather than squeezing them in. A typical plan might link a terrace off the kitchen to a lower lawn, a pool, and a fire feature with a view across the property. Our hardscaping designs set the grades for every piece at once so each level drains and the transitions feel natural. Bluestone, natural stone and larger format pavers tend to suit the township’s homes.

Walls that tame the slope

Few township lots are flat near the house. A properly built retaining wall creates level ground for a patio or play area and keeps soil off the driveway. We build in segmental block or natural stone with drainage gravel and outlets behind the wall. Taller grades are usually split into terraces, which are easier to plant and easier on the eye. We also rebuild old dry laid field walls that have tumbled over time.

Driveways that face real winters

Long private drives in the township take a beating from plows, frost and runoff running down the slope. We replace and rebuild them in asphalt or concrete, add stone or paver aprons near the house, and include swales or channel drains where water crosses the drive.

Before the design is set

  • Wells and septic. We keep equipment and new work clear of both.
  • Water features. Ponds, streams and wetlands may come with buffer rules.
  • Access. Wide, firm routes for deliveries save lawns and cost.
  • Phasing. Large plans can be built in stages if the grades are set first.

FAQ

Mendham Township, NJ FAQs

Can’t find your answer? Call us at (973) 874-8169.

Do you cover Mendham Township and Mendham Borough?

Yes. The township wraps around the borough and each has its own building department. This page is about the township, including the Brookside area. We confirm which municipality your property is in before applying for anything.

Our property has a septic field and a well. Does that limit where a patio can go?

It can. Heavy equipment and new hardscape should stay off the septic field, and grading should not push runoff toward the well. We mark both during the estimate and plan access around them.

Can you build a patio far from the house, near a pond or field edge?

Often, yes. Remote patios need a path for deliveries and a plan for drainage. Land near ponds, streams or wetlands can carry buffer rules, so we help you check before the design is final.
