Stone Walls, Driveways and Estate Masonry in Alpine, NJ

Alpine is a borough of large, private properties on the wooded heights of the Palisades. Projects here tend to be bigger in scale: long driveways, stone walls, entry courts and full outdoor living areas.

Natural stone front yard wall with matching stone curb along the driveway

Alpine sits at the northeast corner of Bergen County, up on the Palisades above the Hudson. Homes here are set far back from the road on big, wooded lots, and many have gated entries, long drives and extensive grounds. That scale changes the conversation. Instead of a single patio or a set of steps, owners usually want hardscape that ties a whole property together and looks like it was always part of the house.

What the ground is like up here

The Palisades are a ridge of hard volcanic rock, and in much of Alpine bedrock is not far below the topsoil. Shallow rock can be a good, stable base, but it means some excavation needs heavier equipment, and drainage cannot simply soak away. We plan footings, wall bases and drainage lines around what the site actually holds, and we keep runoff moving off paved areas so it does not sit against foundations or freeze on walkways.

Driveways and entry courts

Long tumbled paver driveway leading to the street

A long driveway is often the first thing visitors see. We build paver driveways with a deep stone base and a defined border, and we can widen the area near the house into a motor court with room to turn. Natural stone curbing, pillars at the gate and matching walls along the drive help the whole approach feel finished.

Stone walls and terraces

Natural stone suits the wooded setting better than anything else. We build freestanding garden walls, dry-laid and mortared stone walls, and retaining walls that step a sloped yard into usable terraces.

Outdoor living on a larger scale

Behind the house there is usually room for more than one space. Common combinations we design include:

  • A main patio off the kitchen with a seating wall
  • A stone outdoor fireplace or fire pit area set a short walk from the house
  • Pool coping and decking through our pool masonry work
  • Bluestone paths linking each area to the driveway and garden

Working on a private estate

We keep equipment and materials to designated areas, protect lawns and existing stone, and agree on access routes before the first delivery. Gated properties often have their own rules for crews, and we follow them.

FAQ

Alpine, NJ FAQs

Can’t find your answer? Call us at (973) 874-8169.

Can you build a long paver driveway on an Alpine property?

Yes. On a long run the base is the most important part. We excavate to firm ground, build up compacted stone, add edge restraint and plan the pitch so water leaves the surface along the whole length instead of pooling at low spots.

We hit rock when we tried to dig a footing. Is that a problem?

Shallow rock is common on the Palisades ridge. It often makes a better bearing surface than soil, but it changes how we excavate and anchor walls and steps. We plan for it at the estimate rather than discovering it mid-job.

Do you match existing stone on older walls?

We source stone as close as we can in color, size and texture, then lay it in the same pattern and joint style so new sections read as part of the original wall.

Will our project need approval from the borough?

Larger walls, driveway changes and pool area work often need permits. We check with the borough building department and handle the paperwork before work begins.
