Glen Rock is a mostly residential borough of tree-lined streets, built up largely between the 1920s and the postwar years. Center-hall colonials, brick and stucco Tudors, Cape Cods and some later split-levels sit on moderate lots, with detached garages at the end of long, narrow driveways on many older blocks. Because the borough sits right next to Hawthorne, it is one of the closest towns to our office.
Front steps with character
On homes of this age, the front steps set the tone for the whole facade. Many original steps in Glen Rock were brick or concrete on shallow footings, and after decades of frost they have shifted, cracked or separated from the house.

We rebuild front steps on a new footing, then finish them in brick, stone veneer or a combination, usually with bluestone treads and black railings. The goal is steps that look like they were always part of the house.
Brick and stucco on older homes
Tudors and colonials in town often combine brick with stucco and stone trim. Mortar joints on chimneys, front walls and window sills are where wear shows first. Tuckpointing replaces failed mortar before water gets into the wall, and we match the color and tooling of the original joints.
Walks, driveways and backyards
Long, narrow driveways and curving front walks are common here. Popular updates include:
- A paver or bluestone front walk that curves to the steps
- Replacing a cracked driveway strip with pavers or new concrete
- A compact backyard patio sized to the lot
- A band of stone veneer to cover a plain foundation
Our patio and walkway designs work around mature trees and existing garden beds.
Foundations
Older foundations can show settlement cracks or let water in after heavy rain. We assess and repair them, and we often pair foundation work with grading improvements outside.
Permits for steps, walls and driveway changes go through the borough building department, which we check with before work begins.
