Waldwick is a mostly residential borough in northwest Bergen County, with a compact downtown built around its train station. The housing is classic mid-century suburbia: Cape Cods, ranches, split-levels and colonials on medium lots, with some older homes near the center. Parts of town are flat and others slope gently, and a few streams wind through the borough. It is a place where people stay a long time and keep improving the houses they have.

Front walks that welcome you home

Many homes here still have the original narrow concrete walk, now cracked, heaved by roots or sloping toward the house. Replacing it is one of the most effective upgrades for a cape or ranch. Our patios and walkways can be wider, gently curved and bordered, and they connect the driveway, front door and side yard in a way the old slab never did.

Rebuilding front and back steps

Segmental block steps built into a low retaining wall on a sloped lawn

Step sets on mid-century homes are often original and showing it. We rebuild them on new footings as concrete steps faced in stone or brick, or as segmental block steps where a yard slopes up to the house. Railings go in solidly anchored, not bolted to crumbling edges.

Backyard patios and fire pits

Waldwick backyards are a comfortable size, big enough for a patio and lawn without one crowding the other. Typical requests:

  • a paver patio off the kitchen or sliding door
  • a curved path to a shed, garden or play area
  • a fire pit with a ring of seating
  • small steps where the yard rises toward the back

For homes near the downtown and the train station, where lots are a little smaller, we keep patio designs compact and focus on a good connection between the back door, the driveway and the yard.

Water and foundations

Older foundations and settling soil can let water in after heavy rain, especially on lower lots near streams. We start with grading and downspouts, then look at the walls. When water keeps coming through, basement waterproofing is the next step.

A note on approvals

The borough building department may need to review new steps, walls or added pavement. We check before scheduling so there are no surprises midway through.

FAQ

Waldwick, NJ FAQs

Can’t find your answer? Call us at (973) 874-8169.

My Waldwick ranch has one step at the door and no walkway. What do you suggest?

A wide landing in pavers or bluestone with a walkway out to the driveway makes a low ranch entry feel more inviting. It also gives you a solid spot for packages and a bench.

Can you add a fire pit to an existing patio?

Usually, yes. We can build a fire pit on or next to your current patio and match it with a border or seating wall.

Why does water collect along my foundation every spring?

On many Waldwick lots, the soil next to the house has settled over the years and now slopes toward it. Regrading, extending downspouts or rebuilding a walkway with the right pitch often solves it before waterproofing is needed.
