River Vale is a residential township in the Pascack Valley, with part of the Lake Tappan reservoir inside its borders. Most homes went up from the 1950s on, colonials, split-levels and later custom builds, and lots tend to be wider and deeper than in the older boroughs to the south. Many backyards back onto woods. For hardscape that means more room to work with, and more water and tree roots to plan around.
Pool surrounds that hold up

Plenty of River Vale yards have an in-ground pool that is now on its second or third deck. Coping stones loosen, concrete decks crack and settle near the skimmer, and old surfaces get slippery. Our pool masonry covers new coping, paver decks and stamped concrete, plus the low walls and steps that often surround them.
Patios in layers
With the space available, a single rectangle of pavers often undersells the yard. Homeowners here tend to ask for:
- a dining area near the kitchen door
- a separate sitting area with a fire pit
- a walkway linking the patio, pool and driveway
- a seating wall where the lawn starts to slope
We design these as one hardscaping project so the levels, colors and drainage work together.
Patio color is worth thinking about here too. Lighter pavers stay cooler around a pool in July, while darker blends hide the leaf stains and pollen that come with a wooded lot. We usually lay a few samples on site so you can judge them in your own light.
Long driveways
Setbacks are generous in parts of town, and longer driveways mean more surface for frost to crack. Whether you choose concrete, asphalt or pavers, the base depth matters most. We excavate soft or root-filled soil and replace it with compacted stone before anything is laid.
Working around trees and wet ground
Mature oaks and maples give River Vale its character, but their roots lift slabs and their shade keeps patios damp. We route footings around major roots when we can and choose paver textures that stay safer underfoot in shade. Low spots in a wooded yard can stay wet, so we check grade carefully, and the township may review projects that add hard surface.
River Vale neighbors Old Tappan and Westwood, two more of the Bergen County towns we serve. When you are ready to plan the backyard, book a free estimate.
