Lyndhurst is a township in the southern tip of Bergen County. The Passaic River forms its western edge, and a large share of its land to the east is Meadowlands marsh and commercial property. Most residents live in the older neighborhoods on the higher ground toward the river, where streets are lined with brick and frame houses, two-families and Capes, many of them built before the 1960s. Many homes have brick fronts, brick stoops and brick chimneys, which means mortar joints and steps are a big part of the work.
Brick that has seen a lot of winters
Brick is durable, but the mortar between it is meant to wear out first. On older Lyndhurst houses we see eroded joints on chimneys, porch columns and the sides of stoops that face the weather. Once water gets in, it freezes and pushes brick faces off. Our tuckpointing and repointing work removes failing mortar and refills the joints to match the color and profile of the original.
Steps worth keeping and steps worth rebuilding

A brick stoop with bluestone treads suits the streetscape here. If the steps are structurally sound, new treads and repointing may be all they need. If they have dropped or split from the house, we rebuild them on a frost-depth footing and lay new brick to match. Railings get replaced at the same time so everything lines up.
Foundations and walkways
Parged or bare concrete foundations often show cracks and staining. We can repair cracks, refinish the parging or cover the wall in stone veneer through our stone masonry and brickwork service. Side walkways between houses are another regular request: they are short, narrow and often cracked by downspouts that empty right onto them.
What to think about first
- Side yards between homes are tight, so we plan material drops and access with neighbors in mind.
- Homes closer to the Meadowlands sit on softer ground and need deeper bases.
- Sidewalk and curb work usually involves the township.
