Dumont sits in the Northern Valley, with Bergenfield, Haworth and New Milford among its neighbors. Most of the borough was built out in the first half of the last century and the postwar decades, so the streets are lined with Cape Cods, colonials and ranches on small, mostly flat lots. Front yards are short, driveways run along one side of the house and the backyard is where families have the most room to work with, even if that room is limited.
Making a compact backyard work

In a narrow yard, every foot counts. A well planned paver patio usually starts right at the back door, uses a border to define the edge and leaves enough lawn for kids or a garden. Ideas that suit Dumont lots:
- A patio running the width of the house instead of out into the yard
- A side walkway from the driveway so guests do not cut through the house
- A small fire pit set into the corner farthest from the neighbors
- An arbor or pergola on the patio for shade and a bit of privacy
Rear stoops and steps
Back doors on older capes and colonials often have a small concrete stoop that has cracked or settled. We rebuild them in brick, stone veneer or concrete, and we can widen the landing so you can open a storm door while holding groceries. A stoop that steps straight down onto a new patio ties the two together.
Level ground still needs pitch
Flat lots can look easy, but water still has to go somewhere. Without enough slope, rain sits on the patio or drains back toward the foundation. We pitch every surface away from the house and toward lawn areas or drains, and we look at where your downspouts empty before we build.
Concrete that just needs repair
Not every crack means a full replacement. Where a walk or slab is still level, crack repair and sealing can keep it in service for years.
