Teaneck is a large township between the Hackensack River and Overpeck Creek, and its neighborhoods differ more than most. Some sections have 1920s and 1930s Tudors, colonials and stucco homes with brick and stone trim, set on curving streets that climb and dip. Other areas filled in after World War II with capes and split-levels on flatter ground. Mature street trees shade almost everything. A project that is right for one Teaneck block can be wrong for the next, so we look at the house first.
Entries for older homes

A Tudor or brick colonial deserves an entry in matching materials. Red brick pavers, bluestone treads and brick or stone risers tie the walk to the house. Our stone masonry and brickwork also covers the brick details around doorways and garden walls that give these homes their character.
Slopes and retaining walls
Hilly lots are common in parts of Teaneck, and many have old walls that are leaning or bulging. A failing wall usually lacks drainage behind it. When we rebuild with segmental block or stone retaining walls, we add a gravel backfill and a drain so water pressure does not push the new wall over too. Steps set into the wall make a sloped yard far easier to use.
Chimneys and old brick
Many older homes still have tall masonry chimneys that take the brunt of the weather. Cracked crowns, missing mortar and loose top courses let water down into the house. We repoint, rebuild upper courses and pour new crowns.
Where a postwar home sits on a slight rise, a few wide paver steps from the back door down to the patio feel more comfortable than a narrow wooden stair, and they never need staining.
Backyards on postwar blocks
On the flatter, newer streets, the requests shift toward patios and walkways. A clean paver patio off the back door, a side walk to the driveway and simple LED step lights can make a cape or split-level yard much more usable after dark.
Before you start in Teaneck
- The township building department reviews structural work like steps and walls.
- Large street trees may be protected, so plan around them.
- Older properties sometimes hide old walls or steps under soil, which we probe for before digging.
