Englewood is one of the older communities in eastern Bergen County and is a city rather than a borough. That history shows in its housing. On the east side, toward the Palisades, streets climb past large homes from the early twentieth century, many with brick and stone facades, slate roofs and long driveways. Closer to downtown and on the west side, blocks are denser, with colonials, two-family houses and smaller older homes. Both halves of the city have plenty of masonry, and plenty of it is now old.
Restoring original masonry
On older Englewood houses the brick, stone and mortar are part of what makes the home valuable. Replacing them with modern materials that do not match can hurt more than help. Our historic masonry restoration work focuses on:
- Matching brick size, color and texture
- Choosing a mortar compatible with the original
- Copying the original joint profile
- Repairing stone sills, lintels and steps rather than replacing them
Chimneys and tall walls
Large older homes often have several chimneys, and the upper courses take the worst of the weather. We rebuild crowns, repoint and reset loose brick through our chimney masonry service.
Entries on any scale

A grand entry and a simple city stoop both have to be safe and solid. We rebuild front steps on new footings in brick, stone or concrete, with bluestone or limestone-look treads and railings that suit the house.
Slopes on the east side
As the ground rises toward the ridge, many properties have retaining walls holding up driveways, terraces and gardens. Older stone walls can lean or bulge as drainage behind them fails. We repair, reset or rebuild them with proper drainage so they stay put.
Permits and historic considerations
Exterior masonry and wall work may need a permit from the city building department, and properties in a historic area may face added review. We help you find out what applies before plans are final.
