Emerson sits in the Pascack Valley between Westwood and Oradell, a mostly residential borough with a small downtown and streets of homes built largely in the decades after the war. Split-levels, bi-levels and center-hall colonials are common, typically on moderate lots with gentle grades rather than steep hills. The style of house has a direct effect on the masonry it needs.
The split-level entry problem
Split-level and bi-level homes often put the front door at an in-between height, with a short flight of steps and a small, cramped landing. The original concrete was usually poured as a single block, and after decades it has settled, cracked or pulled away from the foundation.

Replacing those steps is a chance to fix the layout. We build front steps and stoops with a generous landing, even risers and solid railings, finished in brick, stone veneer or bluestone. Tying in a new walk to the driveway completes the entry.
Walkways that connect
On many Emerson lots the front walk runs straight from the curb, while everyone actually arrives from the driveway. A paver or bluestone walkway that follows the way people walk, with a border and planting beds alongside, fixes that and improves the look of the house.
Backyard patios and gentle grades
Yards here are often fairly flat with a mild rise or drop at the back. A low seating wall or short retaining wall can handle that grade and give the patio a defined edge. Popular combinations include:
- A paver patio off the lower-level slider with a few steps to the yard
- A raised patio with stone veneer faces and planters
- A walkway from the patio around to the side gate
- A fire pit set on the far side of the lawn
Before work starts
Emerson, like many Bergen towns, reviews work that adds hard surfaces or changes steps near the setback line. We check with the borough building department and take care of permits that apply.
