Park Ridge is a borough in the Pascack Valley of northern Bergen County, next to Montvale and Woodcliff Lake. Around its downtown and rail station, streets are lined with older homes: Victorians, Foursquares and early Colonials, many with full front porches. Farther from the center, the housing shifts to postwar Capes, Colonials and splits on suburban lots. The terrain is mostly gentle, with some rolling streets.
Porches that anchor the house

A front porch is a big part of how an older Park Ridge home looks from the street. When the steps sag, the slab cracks or the columns rot at the base, the whole house looks tired. We rebuild porch steps and slabs, add stone veneer bases to columns, and handle porch framing and roofing so the entire entry is finished at once. Our stone masonry and brickwork page covers veneer, brick and stone accents.
Steps on postwar homes
Capes and Colonials from the middle of the last century usually have a simple concrete stoop. We replace these with concrete steps faced in brick or stone, with bluestone treads and new railings. Where there is room, a wider landing makes the entry feel more generous.
Walkways and side paths
A front walk that matches the new steps ties everything together. We build paver and bluestone walks, plus side paths to the backyard or the driveway, with a compacted base and edging so they stay true.
Things to settle before construction
- Porch roof support. If the roof rests on the steps or slab being replaced, it must be temporarily supported. We plan for that.
- Matching old details. On older homes, we look at railing styles, brick color and trim so the new work fits.
- Borough approvals. Porch and step work often needs a permit from the borough building department.
- Timing. Masonry and concrete work best in moderate weather, so spring and fall are ideal.
