Lodi is a densely built borough in southwestern Bergen County, with the Saddle River running through it. Blocks are tight and the housing is mostly early and mid twentieth century: two-family homes, Capes, small Colonials and brick houses, many with a stoop right off the sidewalk and a driveway barely wider than a car. There is little room on these lots, so the front yard does a lot of work, and the masonry there gets plenty of wear.
Front of the house first
The stoop is the face of most Lodi homes. Many are poured concrete or brick from decades ago, and they show it: crumbling treads, loose railings, steps pulling away from the wall. We rebuild them on a new footing and finish in brick, stone veneer or concrete with bluestone treads. On a two-family with stacked entries, we design the steps so both doors stay easy to reach. See our concrete steps service for the details.
Driveways that fit tight lots
Narrow driveways that run along the side of the house are typical here. When they crack and heave, we break out the old slab, rebuild the base and pour new concrete pitched away from the foundation. Some owners switch to pavers for a cleaner look. Either way, we keep the edge along the house tight so water does not drain against the basement wall. More on concrete and asphalt driveways.
Low walls, pillars and old brick

Short front walls with brick pillars are a Lodi signature. Cars, snowplows and frost all take a toll, and the pillar caps are usually the first thing to go. We rebuild pillars, reset walls, and repoint brick on the house and chimney so water stays out.
Quick checklist for Lodi homeowners
- Confirm who owns a shared driveway or wall before work starts.
- Expect the borough to have a say on curb cuts and sidewalk work.
- Plan parking for the job day, since streets are busy.
- Ask about drainage if your block is near the river.
