Midland Park is a small, close-knit borough in northwest Bergen County, next to Wyckoff, Ridgewood and Waldwick. It feels like a village of modest homes: many houses date from the early and middle twentieth century, lots are narrow, and homes sit close to each other and close to the street. The ground is gently rolling. For hardscape work, that means space is the constraint, and good design matters more than square footage.
Entries on close-set houses
When the house is a few steps from the sidewalk, the stoop is the whole front yard. We rebuild worn concrete and brick steps with bluestone treads, solid footings and railings sized to the entry. On older homes we often pick brick that suits the existing facade instead of switching to a new material. Details are on our concrete steps page.
Side yards and small backyards

The narrow strip between two Midland Park houses is often a muddy path or a broken concrete walk. A paver side walk or a long, slim patio can turn it into usable space. Behind the house, compact backyards work best with a patio sized for a table plus a walk to the garage or gate. Our paver construction uses a compacted base and a firm edge so narrow runs stay straight.
Older brick and chimneys
Brick chimneys, garden walls and foundation details on older homes all wear at the joints. Repointing keeps water from getting behind the brick, and replacing a cracked chimney crown stops leaks at the source. We match mortar color so the repair blends in.
Planning tips for tight lots
- Measure twice. On narrow lots, every inch of walkway width counts. We mark out layouts on site before you commit.
- Talk to the neighbors. Material deliveries and equipment may need a corner of their driveway for a day.
- Watch the drainage. Water from two roofs often ends up in the same side yard, so pitch and outlets matter.
- Borough approvals. Steps, walls and some patios may need a permit from the borough.
