Wyckoff is a township in northwest Bergen County that was once farmland, and some of that open, green character remains. Today it is mainly residential, with colonials, ranches and custom homes set on large lots with mature trees. The ground is mostly gentle with some rolling sections. Where a smaller town might have room for one modest patio, many Wyckoff yards can hold an entire outdoor living area, and owners here often plan the backyard as a long-term project.

Patios with presence

A large lot calls for a patio that holds its own. Circular designs with a contrasting border, multi-level layouts and generous seating areas work well. Our paver patios are built on a deep, compacted base and pitched so water runs off into the lawn, not toward the house.

Fire features

Fire pits and outdoor fireplaces are popular in Wyckoff because they make the patio usable well into the cool months. A fire pit invites a circle of chairs. A fireplace adds height and a focal point and blocks the wind. We place them with distance from the house, trees and neighbors in mind.

Walls for gentle and steeper grades

On rolling lots, low seating walls and taller retaining walls define spaces and hold back soil. We build them in natural stone or segmental block, always with drainage behind. A wall that doubles as seating is one of the most useful features we add.

Front of the house

Wyckoff homes often have long front lawns and wooded frontage. Projects we plan for the front include:

  • natural stone walls and matching curbing along the driveway
  • stone veneer porch columns and foundations
  • bluestone walkways and landings
  • brick or stone front steps with bluestone treads

Front steps deserve attention too. On a long colonial facade, wider steps with a deep landing look more in proportion than a narrow stoop, and they make room for planters on either side.

Planning ahead

Large projects benefit from early planning. Doing the grading and drainage for the entire yard at once, then building in phases, saves rework. Trees, septic or utility lines and lot coverage limits all shape the final layout.

FAQ

Wyckoff, NJ FAQs

Can’t find your answer? Call us at (973) 874-8169.

How big should a patio be for a Wyckoff backyard?

It depends on how you will use it. A dining table, a lounge area and a fire pit each need their own space. We lay out furniture on paper with you first, then size the patio to fit, not the other way around.

Can you build a stone wall along the front of my property?

Yes. Natural stone front walls, sometimes paired with matching stone curbing along the driveway, suit Wyckoff's wooded streets. We build them on proper footings so frost does not push them out of line.

Can the patio and front entry match?

They can and often should. Using the same stone or paver family front and back ties the property together.

Do I need township approval for a large patio?

It may depend on the size and lot coverage. We check with the township building department before work starts.
