Montvale is the northernmost borough of the Pascack Valley, bordering New York State. It has a commuter rail station and a small center, but much of the town is made up of single family neighborhoods from the second half of the twentieth century and later, plus a number of townhouse and condominium communities. Lots are larger than in the older river towns to the south, and many houses were built with a basic concrete pad or a wood deck out back that owners are now ready to replace.
Turning the back door into an outdoor room

A lot of Montvale homes have sliding or French doors that open a foot or two above grade. The right set of steps makes the patio feel connected to the kitchen or family room. We build wide paver or stone-faced steps, sometimes wrapping a corner of the house, that lead down to a paver patio sized for how you actually use the yard.
Bigger yards, bigger plans
With more room to work, Montvale homeowners often combine several elements: a dining area near the house, a lounge area with a fire pit farther out, a walk to the side gate, and sometimes a pool surround. We plan the whole space as one design so the pieces line up and drain correctly. See our hardscaping page for the full range.
Ideas that work well here
- Curved patio edges that soften the line between pavers and lawn
- Built-in step lights for evening use
- Seating walls that double as a border on a gently sloping yard
- Contrasting soldier course borders around the patio edge
Stucco and siding details
Some newer Montvale homes have stucco or stone accents on the facade. When we tie a patio or steps into a stucco wall, we flash and seal the joint so water does not get behind the finish. We also handle stucco repair if the base of the wall has been damaged by splash or old landscaping.
