New Milford is a residential borough in eastern Bergen County, set along the east bank of the Hackensack River with Oradell, River Edge and Teaneck nearby. Most of the town was built out in the decades after World War II, so the typical house is a Cape Cod, ranch or split-level on a modest suburban lot. The land is mostly gentle, sloping down toward the river on the west side of town.
Entries that need more than a patch

Postwar houses were often built with a small concrete stoop and no cover over the door. Seventy years later, the stoop is cracked and the entry looks bare. We rebuild concrete steps on a solid footing, face them in brick or stone, and can add a covered porch with framing and roofing so you have shelter while you find your keys.
On ranches, a wider landing with a short roof can change the whole front of the house. On split-levels, we often rebuild the main stoop and the lower entry at the same time.
Driveways for today’s cars
Single car driveways were standard when these neighborhoods went up. Many New Milford families now need room for two or three vehicles. We replace and widen driveways in concrete, asphalt or pavers, rebuild the apron, and make sure the new surface drains to the street instead of the garage. See concrete and asphalt driveways for options.
Basements near the river
Homes on the lower streets toward the river can deal with damp basements, especially after heavy rain. The fix may be as simple as extending downspouts and regrading, or it may call for sealing foundation cracks and waterproofing. We start by looking, not selling.
A few New Milford pointers
- Check lot coverage limits before planning a wider driveway or large patio.
- Do the steps and walkway in one project for a matched finish.
- Spring and early summer fill up quickly, so a winter estimate helps.
