River Edge grew mostly in the decades after World War II, and you can still read that history on almost any block: Cape Cods with dormers, center-hall colonials, ranches and split-levels on regular suburban lots. The borough runs along the west bank of the Hackensack River, so the land is mostly gentle, with lower ground toward the water. Homes here are not huge and not crowded, which makes them a good fit for practical, well-built hardscape.
Rethinking the front walk
Most houses in town came with a straight concrete walk from the driveway to a small stoop. Seventy years later, those walks are cracked and the stoops have settled. Swapping them for a curved paver path with a contrasting border changes the whole look of a cape or colonial without touching the house itself. Our patios and walkways start with digging out the old base, since a new surface on a tired base will sink the same way the old one did.
Stoops and short step runs

Split-levels and raised ranches often have just three or four steps to the door, and they wear out at the same rate as taller ones. We rebuild them as concrete steps faced in brick or stone, with bluestone treads that resist salt better than plain concrete.
Backyards near the river
Rear yards in River Edge are usually wide enough for a real patio. A few things we weigh before laying one out:
- which way the yard drains and whether a patio would push water toward the house
- where the back door sits and whether steps or a landing are needed
- how much of the lot is already covered, since the borough may limit hard surfaces
- shade from mature trees, which affects paver color choice
Many River Edge homeowners also ask about a back stoop or a small landing off the kitchen. Adding one at the same time as the patio usually costs less than doing them separately, and it lets us match the materials so the back of the house looks planned rather than patched together.
Cracks in older foundations
Poured and block foundations from the postwar years tend to show hairline and stair-step cracks by now. Many are cosmetic, but cracks that leak or keep widening deserve attention. We handle crack repair and, when a wall has moved, larger foundation work.
