Ridgefield is a borough in southeastern Bergen County. It shares part of its name with Ridgefield Park, its neighbor, but the two are separate towns. This page covers Ridgefield. The borough sits along a ridge, with higher ground on the eastern side and land that falls away to the west toward the marshes of the Meadowlands. Housing is dense and mixed: older one and two-family homes, brick houses, and newer multi-family buildings that have replaced some of the original homes.

Two kinds of ground in one town

On the ridge, sloped lots mean tall front steps, retaining walls along the sidewalk and driveways that climb from the street. Down on the lower western streets, soils are softer and wetter, and the main concern is settling and drainage. The right footing depth and base thickness depend on where your house sits, so we look at each property rather than using one standard approach.

Steps and walls on sloped lots

Where a front yard sits above the sidewalk, a short wall and a set of steps carry the entry. We build concrete steps faced in brick or stone with bluestone treads, and front walls in block, stone veneer or segmental units. Taller slopes call for engineered retaining walls with drainage behind them.

Brick pillars, chimneys and old mortar

Brick gate pillars, porch columns and chimneys are common on older Ridgefield houses, and they tend to fail from the top down. We repoint worn joints, rebuild loose sections and replace caps and crowns. Cracks in block foundations and concrete slabs can be sealed through our crack repair service before they let water in.

What to plan for

  • Which Ridgefield? Confirm your municipality, since permits go through different offices.
  • Ridge or lowland? Your location in town changes footing and drainage choices.
  • Tight streets. Deliveries and parking take planning on dense blocks.
  • Shared walls. On attached or close-set homes, agree on the work with your neighbor first.

FAQ

Ridgefield, NJ FAQs

Can’t find your answer? Call us at (973) 874-8169.

Do you work in Ridgefield Park as well?

Yes. Ridgefield and Ridgefield Park are separate municipalities with their own building departments. We serve both and check the right rules for your address.

My brick gate pillars are cracked and leaning. Can they be fixed?

Pillars usually lean because the footing moved or water got into the top. We rebuild them from a solid base with a new cap that sheds water.

Is the ground different on the west side of town?

Yes. The land drops toward the Meadowlands, and soils there can be softer and wetter. We use deeper bases for slabs and steps on those streets.
