Oradell is a residential borough in central Bergen County on the west bank of the Hackensack River, with the Oradell Reservoir just upriver. The older parts of Oradell are full of homes from the first half of the twentieth century: brick Colonials, Tudors with stucco and half-timbering, and center-hall houses on tree-shaded lots. Newer homes fill in other neighborhoods. The ground slopes gently toward the river, and mature trees are everywhere.
Entries in keeping with the house

On a Tudor or brick Colonial, the front entry carries a lot of the home’s character. Clay-toned paver walks, brick steps capped with bluestone and stone accents suit these facades far better than a plain concrete slab. We plan the entry with the whole front of the house in mind and build it with stone masonry and brickwork that matches existing materials.
Repairing original brick
Many Oradell homes still have their original brick on walls, chimneys and garden features. Older brick is often softer than modern brick, and it needs mortar that is compatible. We remove failing joints carefully and repoint with a mix matched in color and strength. Where brick has spalled, we replace individual units rather than rebuild whole walls. See historic masonry restoration for more on the approach.
Chimneys
Tall brick chimneys on older houses take the worst of the weather at the top. Cracked crowns and loose bricks let water into the flue and the attic. We repair crowns, repoint and rebuild the upper courses when needed.
Patios behind older homes
Backyards here tend to be shaded and established. A brick or bluestone patio with steps down from French doors fits the style and works around mature plantings.
Points to plan for
- Older brick needs softer, compatible mortar, not the hardest mix available.
- Tree roots near the house affect where steps and patios can be excavated.
- Larger exterior changes may need borough review.
