Retaining Walls, Steps and Patios in Cresskill, NJ

Cresskill runs from fairly level valley streets in the west to wooded, sloping lots as you climb toward the Palisades. On the hillier side, retaining walls and stepped layouts are often the key to a usable yard.

Cresskill is a Northern Valley borough with a split personality when it comes to terrain. The western neighborhoods near the valley floor are fairly level, with capes, colonials and split-levels on regular lots. Head east and the land climbs toward the Palisades ridge, where houses sit on wooded slopes, driveways bend uphill and backyards often fall away from the house. That eastern side is where most of the masonry challenges in town come from.

Making a sloped yard usable

A yard that tilts is hard to enjoy. Chairs rock, kids cannot play ball and rain carries soil onto the lawn below. The usual answer is to cut the slope into level terraces held up by retaining walls, then link them with steps.

Stone steps climbing beside a stacked stone retaining wall

A wall that lasts depends on what is behind it as much as the face you see. We build with:

  1. A compacted base trench below the first course
  2. Clean drainage stone behind the wall
  3. A perforated pipe to carry water out at the bottom
  4. Geogrid reinforcement on taller walls where the design calls for it

Steps that follow the grade

Front walks on hilly lots often need several sets of steps rather than one. We build them in stone, bluestone or concrete with landings so the climb feels comfortable, and we add railings where the drop calls for them. Low-voltage step lights are a good addition on wooded lots that get dark early.

Patios on more than one level

On a slope, a single big patio can mean a very tall wall. Two smaller levels joined by wide steps often fit the land better and look more natural. We plan hardscaping projects so each level has a purpose, such as dining near the house and a fire pit a few steps down.

Water coming downhill

Uphill neighbors, long driveways and shallow rock all send water toward houses on the slope. Before adding hard surfaces we look at grading, drains and the foundation, since basement leaks often trace back to the same runoff.

Wall heights and grading changes may need a permit from the borough, which we confirm before starting.

We serve Cresskill and the wider Bergen County area, including nearby Tenafly and Demarest. Request a free estimate and we will walk the slope with you.

How tall can a retaining wall be before it needs engineering?

It depends on the wall height, what sits above it and local rules. Taller walls and walls holding up a driveway or structure usually need an engineered design and a permit. We tell you at the estimate whether your wall falls in that range and coordinate the design if it does.

Our old railroad tie wall is rotting. What should replace it?

Segmental concrete block and natural stone are the most common replacements. Both last far longer than timber. Segmental block is engineered for drainage and reinforcement, while natural stone suits wooded lots and older homes.

Water runs down our driveway into the garage. Can hardscape fix that?

Usually. A trench drain at the garage, a regraded apron or a curb that redirects water can solve it. We look at the whole slope above the house first, because the fix often starts uphill.
