Maywood is a small borough in central Bergen County, surrounded by busier neighbors like Hackensack and Paramus. It is mostly residential, with tree-lined streets of single family houses built between the early twentieth century and the postwar years: Cape Cods, Colonials, ranches and a few split-levels. The land is fairly flat, and lots are modest. That combination keeps projects straightforward, and it also means small details like step height and walkway pitch make a visible difference.
A better front entry
On many Maywood homes, the original entry is a small concrete stoop with a few steps and a plain rail. We rebuild these with stone veneer or brick risers and bluestone treads, then add a landing big enough to stand on while you unlock the door. If the house sits low, two or three well proportioned steps can look better than the original tall, narrow set. Our concrete steps page covers footings, finishes and railings.
Patios on level lots

Flat backyards are the easiest to build on, and Maywood has plenty of them. A paver patio here usually needs only light grading, so more of the effort goes into layout and finish. Borders, inlays and a curved edge toward the lawn add interest without a lot of extra cost. We build paver patios on compacted stone with a slight pitch away from the house.
Walks, driveways and cracks
Concrete walks that run from the sidewalk to the door, and from the driveway to the back, are often original and badly cracked. Replacing them is quick work. For driveways, we replace worn concrete or asphalt and can widen within whatever the borough allows.
Good to know
- Level lots still need a pitch on every hard surface to move water.
- Street trees can lift sidewalks and walks, and root issues are worth addressing during replacement.
- Doing steps and walkway together gives the best match.
