Ramsey is a borough in northwestern Bergen County, between Mahwah, Allendale and Upper Saddle River, with a walkable downtown and two commuter rail stations. Housing ranges from older homes near the center to Colonials, split-levels and ranches from the postwar decades and larger newer homes on the edges of town. The land rolls more than in central Bergen. Driveways often climb from the street, and many backyards step down from the house.
Driveways that set the tone
Ramsey lots tend to have longer driveways than the denser towns to the south. Asphalt that has cracked and heaved, or a plain concrete slab with failing joints, is a common sight. A paver driveway built on a deep, compacted base handles freeze and thaw well, and damaged pavers can be replaced one at a time. On sloped driveways we pay extra attention to edge restraint and drainage so the surface does not creep downhill.
From the back door to the yard

Split-levels and raised Colonials often have a back door well above the yard, with a small deck or a narrow set of wooden stairs. Replacing them with stone-faced steps leading to a paver patio makes the yard feel connected to the house. Our patios and walkways service covers the patio, steps and paths together.
Handling the grade
Where a yard slopes, a low retaining wall can create a level patio area and double as seating. Taller walls need engineering and borough approval. We design for proper drainage so water from the slope above is routed around the patio instead of across it.
Ramsey planning list
- Check for HOA rules if you live in one of the townhouse or condo communities.
- Ask about lot coverage before adding a large patio or widening the driveway.
- Pick paver colors that work with your siding, roof and front steps.
- Book spring work early, since the season fills up fast.
