Stone veneer front yard wall with black railing on a city street

Wallington is a small, tightly built borough in southwest Bergen County, bounded by the Passaic River on one side and the Saddle River on another. Its streets are lined with two-family homes, multi-family buildings and modest singles on narrow lots, many with a short front yard, a stoop and a driveway squeezed along the side. The ground is mostly flat, and lower blocks near the rivers have dealt with high water. Polish heritage runs deep here, and you see well-kept houses with tidy fronts on nearly every block.

Stoops built for two doors

On a two-family house, the front stoop often serves two entrances and sits high above the sidewalk. When the brick loosens or the concrete cracks, we rebuild it on a new footing with brick, block or poured concrete steps, add bluestone or stone treads and fit railings that are anchored into solid masonry.

Front yard walls

Low walls along the sidewalk are common, and many have cracked or tipped as frost and tree roots worked on them. Our masonry construction and repair covers rebuilding these walls in brick or block with a stone veneer face, often with a railing on top, so they match the stoop.

Driveways on narrow lots

A side driveway on a Wallington lot is usually just wide enough for one car, with the house wall on one side and the property line on the other. We plan the work so forms, trucks and finishing tools fit without damaging the house, and we pitch the new slab toward the street, not the foundation. Concrete is the most common choice here for its durability and easy plowing.

On lots this narrow, side walkways get heavy use for trash cans and access to the back unit. A new concrete or paver side path with a slight pitch toward the street keeps water off both the foundation and the neighbor’s yard.

Old brick and damp basements

Older buildings in town often need repointing on foundations, chimneys and side walls that face weather. Near the rivers, basements can take on water. Before recommending a system, we check:

  • downspouts and where they discharge
  • the pitch of the driveway and walks
  • cracks in the foundation wall
  • signs of past flooding

Flood zone rules may apply on lower blocks.

FAQ

Wallington, NJ FAQs

Can’t find your answer? Call us at (973) 874-8169.

Can you rebuild a stoop for a two-family house with two front doors?

Yes. We lay out the steps and landing so both entries are safe and easy to reach, and we can add a railing between them if the owners want separate access.

Can a low front yard wall be rebuilt to match the steps?

Yes. Matching the wall and stoop in the same brick or stone veneer, with matching railings, gives a narrow front yard a finished look.

Is a paver driveway practical on a narrow Wallington lot?

It can be, though many owners on tight lots choose concrete for its lower cost and easy snow clearing. We explain the tradeoffs and let you decide.
