Freehold covers two towns that share a name. Freehold Borough is the older center and county seat, with a historic downtown and blocks of older homes on smaller lots. Freehold Township wraps around it with suburban neighborhoods of colonials and split-levels, many on generous lots with room for a pool. We work in both, and the projects tend to split along those lines.

Backyard living in the township

Freehold Township backyards are often big enough for a full outdoor plan. Homeowners here ask for patios that connect to a deck or slider, walkways out to the pool, and a place to gather around a fire on cool evenings. Our hardscaping work brings those pieces together into one layout, with grades set so water drains off every surface and away from the house.

Fire pits and outdoor fireplaces

A built fire feature is one of the most popular additions we see in western Monmouth County. A round or square fire pit or outdoor fireplace in stone or block gives the patio a focal point and stretches the outdoor season into the fall. Fireplaces need a solid footing and careful masonry at the firebox. We plan clearances from the house, fences and trees before we start.

Pools and patios

In-ground pools are common across the township, and the decks around older pools are often cracked or uneven. We rebuild pool decks in pavers or stamped concrete, replace coping, and tie the pool area into the main patio with steps or a walkway.

Older homes in the borough

Closer to the center of the borough, the work is often out front. Older brick and concrete steps, porches and foundation walls show their age with loose joints and spalled faces. Tuckpointing and repointing restores the mortar, and we rebuild steps that have settled with brick or stone veneer and bluestone treads that suit an older house. Some properties near downtown may fall under historic district rules, which we check before planning materials.

Things to sort out first

  • Which Freehold? The borough and the township each handle their own permits. We confirm which applies to you.
  • Pool area rules. Pool decks, fences and nearby structures can have their own requirements. We check before design.
  • Gas and electric for fire features. If you want a gas fire pit or lighting, we plan the lines with your licensed trades before the base goes in.
  • Early booking. Patios and pool decks are in demand in spring. A winter estimate keeps your timing flexible.

We also work in Manalapan, Marlboro, Howell and Colts Neck. See all of Monmouth County or our page for Holmdel.

FAQ

Freehold, NJ FAQs

Can’t find your answer? Call us at (973) 874-8169.

Do you work in both Freehold Borough and Freehold Township?

Yes. They are separate municipalities with their own building departments, so permit requirements can differ depending on which side of the line you are on. We confirm which one covers your address and what it requires.

Can you build an outdoor fireplace on an existing Freehold patio?

Sometimes. A fireplace is heavy and needs a proper footing, so we check whether the existing patio base can carry it or whether we need to cut in a new foundation. Fire pits are lighter and fit more easily on an existing surface.

My older borough home has brick steps with loose mortar. What is involved?

If the brick is in good shape, we cut out the failed joints and repoint. If the steps have shifted or bricks are breaking, rebuilding on a new base is the better long term fix. We explain both after looking.
