Red Bank sits on the south bank of the Navesink River, and it is one of the most walkable towns in Monmouth County. Its housing is mostly older, with Victorian and early twentieth century homes, twins and small multi-family buildings on modest lots. Front steps, porches and walkways are close to the sidewalk and very much on display, so homeowners here tend to care about getting the details right.
Front steps with character

Steps on older Red Bank homes are often brick, stone or concrete that has been patched many times. When treads crack and risers lean, the fix is a rebuild on a new footing. We build front steps in brick with bluestone treads, in stone veneer, or in poured concrete, and fit new railings that suit an older facade. Wide bluestone treads and a matching landing make a strong first impression on a narrow front yard.
Restoring older brick and stone
Older masonry calls for care. Many of these homes were built with soft lime mortar, and repairs made with hard modern mortar can crack the brick around them. Our historic masonry restoration work and repointing match mortar strength, color and joint profile, so foundation walls, chimneys and garden walls look right and stay sound. Some parts of town may have historic district rules, and we check them before choosing materials.
Stucco and porches
Stucco is common on older Red Bank homes and porch bases. Moist air off the river means any crack that lets water in will get worse with each winter. Our stucco repairs cut back damaged areas, fix what is underneath and blend the new finish into the old texture. On porches, we also rebuild stone column bases and the steps that lead up to them.
Walkways and small backyards
Narrow lots leave little room to waste. A bluestone or paver walkway along the side of the house, a small patio off the kitchen and a clean landing at the back door can make the yard much more usable. We grade every surface to shed water away from the house and off toward the street or yard.
Worth knowing first
- Borough permits. Steps, walls and work on the public sidewalk may need approval from the borough. We find out and handle it.
- Historic review. If your home falls in a historic area, exterior changes may need review. Let us know early so we can plan materials and timing.
- Low ground near the river. Some lots may fall under flood zone rules. We check before building.
- Tight access. We plan deliveries and cleanup so the sidewalk stays clear for neighbors.
We also serve Fair Haven, Little Silver, Rumson and Shrewsbury. See all of Monmouth County or our page for nearby Middletown.
