Hazlet is a suburban township in northern Monmouth County, a short distance inland from the Raritan Bay. Most of its neighborhoods were built in the middle of the twentieth century, with ranches, split-levels and bi-levels on regular lots that are mostly flat. Many of those homes still have the original backyard setup: a slider or back door, a few concrete steps and a small slab that has cracked and tipped over the years.
From slab to patio
A small concrete pad rarely fits a dining set and a grill, and once it cracks it collects water. We break out the old slab, rebuild the base with compacted stone and lay a paver patio sized for the way your household uses the yard. A contrasting border, a curved edge or a second level can add interest without a lot of extra cost.
Back steps that fit the new patio

When a patio goes in, the back steps usually need to change too. New pavers can be higher or lower than the old slab, and step heights must stay even to be safe. We rebuild back steps with stone, block or paver risers and set a railing where the drop calls for one. Wide steps with a landing feel more like part of the patio.
Walkways and finishing touches
A side walkway from the driveway to the backyard keeps people off the lawn and gives a clean path for bins and gear. We can add one in pavers or concrete at the same time as the patio. Other common add-ons here include:
- A built-in fire pit for cooler evenings (fire pits and fireplaces)
- Low seating walls at the patio edge
- Step lights built into risers
- A pad for a shed or garden storage
Drainage on flat ground
Flat yards can hold water after a storm. We pitch patios slightly away from the house and look at where downspouts discharge so water does not pool at the new steps.
Hazlet borders Holmdel, Keansburg, Union Beach and Aberdeen. Other Monmouth County towns are on our schedule as well.
