Middletown is one of the largest townships in Monmouth County, and it does not have just one look. Neighborhoods closer to Raritan Bay have older, smaller homes on tighter lots. Other sections are classic postwar suburbs of ranches, capes and split-levels. Farther inland, wooded lots and rolling ground hold larger colonials and newer homes. Because the township is so varied, the right approach depends a lot on which part you live in.
Patios and walkways for every kind of lot

Many Middletown backyards have room for a patio with some character. Circular and curved designs, contrasting borders and bluestone walkways are all popular here. We design patios and walkways around how you move through the yard, from the back door to the grill, the pool or the garden. On flatter lots near the bay, we take extra care with the base and the drainage pitch since water has fewer places to go.
Driveways and front entries
Original driveways in older neighborhoods are often cracked and settled, and longer driveways on inland lots take a beating from plows and heavy vehicles. We replace them in concrete, asphalt or pavers on a compacted base built for the length and use. Rebuilding the front steps at the same time gives the house a clean, finished entry. We build steps in poured concrete or faced in brick or stone veneer with bluestone treads.
Slopes, walls and wooded yards
Inland Middletown has more grade than most people expect. A retaining wall can turn a hillside into a terrace, hold back a planting bed or level the ground for a patio. We include drainage stone and outlets behind every wall, because water pressure is what pushes walls over time.
Stucco and chimneys
Stucco shows up on homes across the township, from older houses to newer construction. Cracks, stains and soft spots near the ground usually mean water is getting in. We repair and refinish stucco and look at what is behind it when damage goes deeper. Chimney crowns and upper brick joints are another common repair, especially on homes that have not had masonry work in decades.
Planning notes
- Township approval. Middletown has its own building department. Walls, steps, driveways and aprons may need permits, and we handle them.
- Bayside and riverside lots. Flood zone rules may apply near the water. We check them before design.
- Trees and roots. On wooded lots we plan around large trees so the base stays stable and roots stay healthy where possible.
- Season. Spring through fall is the main building season, so book early for spring.
We also serve Atlantic Highlands, Highlands, Hazlet and Holmdel. See all of Monmouth County or our page for neighboring Red Bank.
