Shrewsbury is a borough just south of Red Bank, with an old historic crossroads at its center and quiet residential streets around it. Most homes are colonials, capes and ranches from the middle of the twentieth century onward, many with brick fronts or brick steps, on comfortable lots shaded by mature trees. The ground is mostly level. Homes here are well cared for, and the typical request is to refresh masonry that has done its job for decades rather than to start over.
Please note this page is about Shrewsbury borough. Its neighbor Shrewsbury Township is a separate municipality with its own building department.
Brick and bluestone front entries

A brick stoop with bluestone treads is the classic entry on many Shrewsbury colonials. Over time, the treads loosen, the mortar fails and the steps settle. We rebuild steps on a proper footing, lay new brick to match the house and set thick bluestone treads and landings. New railings finish the job.
Repointing brick that is still sound
Many brick fronts, chimneys and garden walls here are structurally fine, with only the joints wearing out. Tuckpointing removes failing mortar and replaces it with a mix and color that match the original, which stops water before it reaches the brick. Chimney crowns are worth checking at the same visit.
Patios under mature trees
Shaded backyards are pleasant but come with roots, moss and slow drying surfaces. We lay out paver and bluestone patios around large trees rather than through their root zones, and choose textures that are less slippery when damp.
Good to know before work starts
- Separate towns: borough and township have different offices.
- Tree roots may change where a patio or walkway can go.
- Matching brick is easier with a sample from the house.
- Historic district rules may apply near the center of the borough.
We also serve Red Bank, Little Silver and the rest of Monmouth County.
