Upper Freehold Township sits in the southwestern corner of Monmouth County, along the line with Burlington and Mercer counties. It is largely agricultural, with horse farms, crop fields and preserved farmland, and the historic borough of Allentown at its center. Homes range from eighteenth and nineteenth century farmhouses with fieldstone or brick foundations to newer houses on large lots. Where Millstone Township next door is mostly newer custom homes, Upper Freehold has a deeper stock of truly old buildings, and much of our work here is about keeping them sound.

Old foundations and fieldstone walls

Farmhouse foundations built from fieldstone and lime mortar hold up for a very long time, but they need care. Mortar washes out, stones loosen, and water finds its way in. We reset loose stones, repoint with a mortar compatible with the original and rebuild sections that have moved. Our historic masonry restoration work aims to keep the old wall in service rather than replace it.

Chimneys on older houses

Old chimneys tend to suffer at the top, where weather hits hardest. Loose brick, a cracked crown and failing flashing let water into the house. We rebuild the top courses, pour new crowns and repoint the rest using chimney and fireplace masonry methods suited to the age of the house.

Steps, walks and walls for a rural property

New hardscape on a farm property should look like it has always been there. Bluestone walks, stone steps and low stone walls fit the setting far better than bright concrete. We set them on proper bases so they stay level through hard winters on open, exposed ground.

Planning on a farm property

  • Septic and well locations need to be known before digging.
  • Historic district rules may apply in and around Allentown.
  • Long access drives affect how materials are delivered.
  • Barns and outbuildings often share the same masonry problems as the house.

We also serve Allentown, Millstone Township and the rest of Monmouth County.

FAQ

Upper Freehold, NJ FAQs

Can’t find your answer? Call us at (973) 874-8169.

Can a fieldstone foundation be repaired instead of replaced?

Often, yes. Loose stones can be reset, voids filled and the joints repointed with a compatible mortar. Replacement is only needed where the wall has bowed badly or lost its footing. We assess it in person before recommending anything.

Do you work in Allentown as well?

Yes. Allentown is a separate borough within Upper Freehold with its own offices and its own historic character. We serve both and check which department covers your address.

Can you build new masonry that looks like it belongs on an old farm?

Yes. Natural stone, tumbled brick, bluestone and simple lines all suit a farm setting. We choose materials and joint styles that look at home beside older buildings.
