Little Silver is a residential borough near the Shrewsbury River, with streets of colonials, capes, ranches and farmhouse style homes on established lots. Big shade trees, lawns and planting beds define the neighborhoods. The ground is mostly level, which makes layout simple, but those same mature trees create the most common problem we see: walkways and driveways lifted and cracked by roots.
Front walks around big trees
A concrete walk that has been pushed up by roots is a trip hazard and hard to fix without hurting the tree. We take out the damaged section and rebuild with pavers or bluestone on a well compacted base. Where possible, we curve the walk to give the trunk more room. Pavers have the added benefit that a section can be lifted and reset later if roots keep growing.
Entry courts and steps
On colonials and traditional homes, a brick paver entry court with bluestone steps makes a strong first impression. We build entries that widen near the door, with steps sized to the porch or stoop. Our paver work uses borders and soldier courses to give the space a crisp edge that matches the architecture.
Backyards in a settled neighborhood

Backyards here are often lush, with established gardens and maybe a gazebo or shed. Instead of starting over, we fit patios and paths into what is there: a curved walkway from the house to a sitting area, a patio under the shade of an old tree, or steps lit for evenings.
Planning around mature landscapes
- Root zones. We plan excavation to protect healthy trees.
- Drainage. Flat lots need a gentle pitch so water does not sit on new surfaces.
- Color and texture. Brick tones and bluestone suit most homes here.
- Garden access. We protect beds and lawns during the job.
